Journal Inquirer a Day Late, Dollar Short on Nathan Hale
After the Manchester Board of Education voted to close Nathan Hale Elementary School, in direct contradiction to a promise made by three Democratic Members of the BoE during the 2009 election campaign, Manchester’s local paper of record, the Journal Inquirer, has vociferously advocated for the re-opening of the school.
Among the JI’s proposals for saving Nathan Hale, one was a verbatim copy of one plank of the Manchester Republican campaign platform in 2009. During the campaign, the Board of Directors candidates had run on the idea that before closing a school, the community should hold an advisory referendum to determine the will of the Town on such a proposal. It generated little attention from the Journal Inquirer.
But once the vote was taken to shutter the school, the JI sprang into action and started beating their drum a day late and a dollar short. In response, I wrote a Letter to the Editor of the Journal Inquirer which was published on July 6, 2010 on the Reader’s Page. Read it here (PDF).
